Pandit Sudhakar Chaturvedi was a renowned Vedic Scholar and Gandhian. Deeply influenced by Mahatma Gandhi and Arya Samaj movement, he had worked over 50 spiritual books in four languages. He had spent his last few years in the teaching of Vedas to young enthusiasts. He was the moving spirit behind the Bangalore Arya Samaj, which published the Kannada monthly magazine Veda Taranga.
Pandit Chaturvedi was born on 20 April 1897 in Bangalore, Karnataka, India. A disciple of Swami Shraddhanand
was given his title "Chaturvedi", which means "master of the four Vedas," for his knowledge of the Vedas. A contemporary of Mahatma Gandhi, the participated in the freedom movement and witnessed many events including the 1919 Jallianwala Bagh massacre. He was known as Gandhi's Postman, as he took down and delivered letters dictated by Gandhi addressed to the Viceroys of Governors-General. Gandhi called him 'Karnataki'. He was arrested at least 31 times during the freedom struggle and served jail terms in various p[arts of the country including in Peshawar and Vellore.
Pandit Sudhakar Chaturvedi was the first teacher of Sri Sri Ravi Shankar. In 2011 he took part in India Against Corruption campaign. He was the recipient of many awards including Karnataka Sahitya Anuvada Academy(2007-08), Socio-Economic Development Teacher Award( 2009). In 2010 he was given a "Living Legend" Award by IDL Foundation at a public function where he pledged to donate his eyes. He passed away on 27th February 2020. He was 123.
